Source: Ministry for Primary Industries; National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research Method:
Information about exotic species in New Zealand coastal waters in this indicator is based on two sets of information:
1. The number of exotic species in monitored ports of first entry for international vessels, using all verified records in these locations.
2. The location and date of new discoveries of exotic species by the MHRSS programme, using data collected since the programme began in 2002.
The Ministry for Primary Industries coordinates and undertakes monitoring to identify where exotic species have taken hold and determine the management measures to take. This analysis excludes Gisborne, Napier, Taharoa, and Timaru, which are not currently monitored by the MHRSS. The figures in the map are based on all verified records of non-native species in those locations. Monitoring focuses on the sites where incursions by marine species not currently in New Zealand are most likely to occur.
The accuracy of the data source is of high quality.
