"Land cover describes the extent of vegetation, water bodies, built environments, and bare natural surfaces (eg gravel and rock) across New Zealand. Measuring the composition and changes in land cover can help us understand the pressures that different land uses are placing on the biodiversity and functioning of ecosystems.
This data set relates to the "Land cover" measure on the Environmental Indicators, Te taiao Aotearoa website."

Dataset used to develop the "Irrigated land" indicator [available at www.stats.govt.nz/indicators/irrigated-land]
This indicator measures the total irrigated agricultural land area across New Zealand for 2002, 2017 and 2019. We report on total irrigated land area on farms earnings over $60,000 a year by region and dominant farm type. In 2017 and 2019 we also report on total irrigated land by land use and irrigation system.

The spatial data covers all mainland regions of New Zealand, with the exception of Nelson, which is not believed to contain significant irrigated areas. The spatial dataset is an update of the national dataset that was first created in 2017. The current update has incorporated data from the 2019 – 2020 irrigation season.

Irrigation is used to support land use, particularly in areas with low or seasonal rainfall. Irrigation can improve the productivity of land for farming activity, and support amenity or recreational land uses within urban environments.Irrigation can also alter the natural character of our landscapes (eg change dry land to greener and wetter land), and can increase nutrient (phosphorus and nitrogen) runoff and leaching into waterways.

This dataset shows the total irrigated agricultural land area across New Zealand for 2002 and 2017. Agricultural land irrigated in 2017 is broken down by types of irrigation systems and farm type.
Although it enables and improves farming, irrigation can also have adverse consequences relating to recreation, and can increase pollution and leaching of contaminants into waterways. Irrigation can affect the natural form and character of land (eg dry land to greener and wetter land), fishing, cultivation and food production, animal drinking water, water supply, commercial and industrial water use, and hydro-electric power generation. More irrigated land, and more water abstraction, can place increased pressure on river flows, as well as indirectly increasing pressure on land and fresh water by enabling increased agricultural intensity.

"This data identified areas in the North Island that have been classified as being the most productive for growing food. It supports most crops across New Zealand. Expanding lifestyle blocks and urban areas reduce the availability of high-class land for commercial crop growing, and this land is unlikely to be returned to primary production. This affects our commercial food-production capacity.
This data set relates to the "High-class land for food production" measure on the Environmental Indicators, Te taiao Aotearoa website."
